How To Be Confident When You Don’t Feel Confident
We’ve all had it - those days when you feel down on your luck and like
there will never be another gig/customer /boyfriend/fill-in-the-blank. Not
feeling confident puts you into an indefinite rut and can cost you what you
most want in life. You need to be confident even if you don’t always feel it.
Take these tips on how to be confident and put them into action! You’ll feel
better and be super productive to boot. Know That Role Models Hit Confidence
Lows, Too It may be hard to think that your role models ever felt this way, but
they do! At one point or another in everyone’s lives, they wonder if they can
actually do what they set out to do. If they just gave up at that moment of low
confidence, the world would have missed out on their great achievements. But we
all know that they didn’t give up. Maybe they didn’t get back up on the horse
right away, but eventually, they did. And you know what? They created some
awesome things - just like you’re going to! PS - Remember to stop comparing
yourself to others, too! They are your role models for a reason - you are
working up to their level and beyond. It’ll wreck your confidence to think that
you are in the same place as them.
Step 1: Tell Yourself You Can
The first step is
acknowledging that you can do what you want to do. YOU CAN speak to that
beautiful girl and ask her out. YOU CAN win that big client even though you’re
not a big company... yet. YOU CAN get that perfect job for you. YOU CAN ask a
successful entrepreneur to mentor you. So puff out your chest and say “Yes, I
can!” It’ll make what you want that much more real!
Step 2: Take Action
The best way to boost your confidence is
by doing something that will make you feel amazing. And what will make you feel
amazing is taking the first step. For example, if you’re going to ask a
successful local entrepreneur to be your mentor, you need to do your research.
Find out everything you know about him or her and his or her company. Check to
see if you have connections in common. Research what organizations or associations
he or she belongs to and find out if there are future events or social
networking opportunities that you can join in. Once you have that information,
plan your communication and how you’ll go about asking this person to be your
mentor. Is it going to be by phone or are you going to try to meet him or her
in person first? Get your plan set and then get moving on it!
Step 3: Be Persistent
I don’t mean be annoyingly persistent
- I mean be persistent in the sense of doing things consistently that help you
be more confident. If your first attempt fails, think about how you can turn
that failure into success. Don’t just give up after one attempt. In the example
of the mentor, if you write him or her one email and you give up after not
hearing from him or her, you’ll never get a mentor and grow your business. If
you call him or her a couple times after the email or try to be at an event
they will be at, you may just get the mentor you want. Now, nothing usually
happens in a day, but your confidence doesn’t have to go down because of that.
Persistence is the key to making what you want to happen happen... and giving
yourself a huge confidence boost in the process.
Step 4: Bask in Your Glory
When you finally reach your
objective, take a second and bask in the amazingness that is you! Take a
picture, share your reached goal with your friends, or find some other way to
remember this moment when you hit confidence lows again. It’ll make getting
over that future confidence slump that much easier.
